With summer brings a season of fresh fruit and vegetables — and this year, residents will see a new farmers' market sprouting up this weekend.

Residents looking to score some fresh produce, meats and some unique specialty items will only have to travel as far as the Promenade Shopping Center in Bolingbrook. There, a new farmers' market will be setting up from 9 a.m. to noon this Saturday, June 12, in the outer lot of the shopping mall near Janes Avenue.

The market will run every Saturday through Oct. 16 and will provide special entertainment on certain dates. On June 12, the Heartland Bluegrass Band will perform at 10 a.m.; on June 26, a petting zoo will open at 9 a.m.; and on July 17, free hot, buttered sweet corn (while supplies last) will be provided starting at 10 a.m.

After exploring the possibility for the past couple of years, the Village of Bolingbrook finally connected at the right time with the right vendor to be able to bring a farmers' market to the village this year.

Merrill Marxman, manager and owner of Merrill’s Farmers Markets, has been doing business for the past 12 years and owns markets in Homer Glen, Lockport, Manteno, Frankfort and more.

Not your average farmer’s market, Marxman said his venue includes fresh and organic fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh meats and poultry from nearby farms, artisan breads, aged cheddar cheese and infused-flavored olive oils.
